Painting Petone homes since 2008 — we know which exteriors take the worst of the southerly. Lots of weatherboard and pre-1980 cottages here.
Petone is dense with 1920-1950 timber-frame housing — weatherboard cottages, ex-state houses, and a fair share of art-deco shopfronts on Jackson Street. South-east exposure across most of the suburb means salt-loaded southerlies hit hard, particularly on harbour-facing streets.
We default to the coastal-rated paint spec on anything within four blocks of the foreshore — Resene X-200 over Sureseal primer, zinc treatment on all steel fittings. The further inland you go, the standard inland Lumbersider spec is fine. Lead-paint testing is almost always required on the pre-1960 stock.
